Specialised Dementia Training Course Improves Aged Care Service

We heard from Julie, Lifestyle Manager at an aged care facility, about the specialised dementia training provided by Thean from Dementia Detailing and how it helped her staff improve their service delivery.

Personalised and specialised

When Julie contacted Dementia Detailing, it was because she saw a need for more connection between staff and those residents affected by cognitive decline.

“As an organisation, we wanted to have all staff educated to be able to connect on a more personal level with residents living with dementia,” Julie says.

But she didn’t want another run-of-the-mill training course that didn’t address the specific needs of her organisation.

She sought Dementia Detailing because of the personalised approach and focus on positive approaches to care.

“Dementia Detailing provided the specialised training, tailored to our organisation, that enabled those connections to happen,” Julie explains.

And the results speak for themselves.

“The feedback for Dementia Detailing’s program that we received from our staff was exceptional,” Julie says.

“The trainers were highly experienced and helped our staff to develop a better understanding of dementia and learn practical tips that helped with building connections and supporting healthy behaviours.

The Dementia Detailing program also helped us to see just how much our staff knew about caring for people living with dementia.”

Long-term benefits

The training produced immediate results that helped staff and residents alike.

“With the training, our staff were educated to be much more intuitive, responsive and understanding of a resident’s needs, while better understanding how to communicate with a person living with dementia,” Julie explains.

“The Dementia Detailing training is highly specialised and necessary for service providers and educators in the industry to improve the quality of the training that our care staff, ENs, RNs, Lifestyle, allied health and hospitality staff receive when they start working with people living with dementia.”

The success of the training was largely due to Thean, Dementia Care Consultant at Dementia Detailing, whose knowledge and passion are key to the success of the training.

“Thean from Dementia Detailing is enthusiastic and passionate,” Julie says.

“She communicates very well and will tailor Dementia Detailing’s programs to suit specific needs and desired outcomes.”

And, importantly, the effect of the training isn’t just short-term. Thean shares her skills and knowledge in a way that allows it to continue to be shared well into the future.

“I am looking forward to being able to continue Thean’s work by facilitating future sessions with the tools she has provided to our organisation.”
