Thoughtful Dementia Care for a Loved One

A loved one’s dementia diagnosis is an overwhelming and difficult time for families, as they try to navigate this complex new stage of life, often with little information.

When Tina’s father was diagnosed with dementia, she and her family knew that they wanted to care for him at home and did all they could to keep him settled in a familiar environment.

But, as is often the case, Tina’s father’s dementia progressed rapidly, and she and her family found that they could no longer care for him in the way that he needed. They needed to find thoughtful dementia care that would support him in this new stage of life.

Navigating a new life stage

“We could no longer support Dad safely at home when his dementia progressed over a three-year period,” Tina says.

“It meant that we had to find care for him, which was heartbreaking and emotionally challenging for us.”

This high level of stress and concern is often exacerbated if the person living with dementia is having adverse effects to living arrangements and medications.

“To make it even harder, Dad didn’t respond well to aged care or his medication at the time,” Tina explains.

“He became agitated and upset and we didn’t know what to do.”

Finding the right support

In their search for safer and more effective care for their father, Tina and her family were introduced to Thean and the services she provides through Dementia Detailing.

Thean’s passion for helping families navigate this time, plus her pharmaceutical knowledge, provided a great support to Tina and her family.

“We found her very approachable, compassionate and responsive,” Tina says.

“Because Thean specialises in medications, she worked with our doctor to try different medicines, and her advice was very helpful.

She understands what medications can be used and how they interact together to ensure your loved one is comfortable and can still interact with their family.

Dementia is such an individual experience,” Tina notes.

“Having Thean support us gave us confidence that Dad was receiving the best care and attention. I can’t speak more highly of her.”
